Mind Agitators

A) Caffeine:
Can cause:
  1. nervousness.
  2. Anxiety.
  3. Insomnia.
  4. Irritability.

Acts by:

Increased elimination of calcium from the body.

Sources:

  1. Coffee- about 150 mg per cup.
  2. Black and some green teas, about 80 mg per cup.
  3. Cola, 30-45 mg per cup.

B) Refined Sugar.

Advert effects on the body:

  1. May cause hyperactivity.
  2. Increased anxiety.

Action through:

Vitamin B, especially thiamine is needed for the digestion of sugar. Excessive sugar consumption depletes vitamin B resources required for the normal activities.

Caution:

For some people, too little sugar can cause hypoglycemia which produces symptoms like trembling and anxiety.

C) Alcohol

Can produce a temporary sedating effect on the central nervous system.

High dose of alcohol will produce a stimulating effect.

It is addicting.

Acts By: Destroying Vitamin B

D) Nicotine

Can produce a sense of relaxation and pleasure. Yet more and more is needed over time.

Reduced intake will produce symptoms like anxiety, irritability, restlessness and insomia.

That is the reason why it is so hard to quit smoking.

Acts By:

  • Nicotine triggers the release of Dopamine in the brain, which produce a sense of relaxation and pleasure.
  • Destroying thiamine

Nutrients which help us to calm down

A) Calcium
  • It acts as a gatekeeper to transmit signals between the nerve cells.
Deficiency:
In the parasympathetic nervous system, it will hinder the process of signal transmitting which tell the body to slow down.

Source:
Tofu, green leafy vegetables, dairy products.

B) Amino Acids

  1. Trytophan:
Convert to serotonin after entering the brain. Serotonin has a calming effect on the body.
Sources: Milk, Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds.

2. Glutamine: 80% 0f amino nitrogen is derived from here.
Sources: Food high in protein: Fish, meat, beans, and dairy products.

3. Gamma-Amino Butryic Acid (GABA)
It is a neutrotransmitter that slow down activities between brain nerve cells. So it has a mild relaxing effect.

My New Year Resolution for Health

We invest a lot of time and money on how to increase our wealth. But how much time and money do we spend on our health? Without health, we will be labouring in vain, because we cannot harvest or enjoy our fruits of labour.

My new year resolution so far as health is concern:
1) Exercise at least twice per week
2) Get sufficient sleep, sleep will help you to recuperate. Without sufficient sleep, even the best nutrition and other health programs will not prevent you from accelerated aging.
3) Eat less animals' meat.
4) Eat more vegetables and fruits, but avoid the too sweet ones.
5) Try to cook for ourselves as often as possible.
6) Avoid processed foods.
7) Acquire at least twice per week on health related information.

Coconut oil is effective in preventing lipofuscin or liver spots due to aging and excessive exposure to the sun.
It also helps to speed up the process of healing damaged skin.
It is effective in controlling dandruff.
Its healing effect is due to the increased metabolism rate which help to remove toxins, replacing damaged tissues and cells and fighting against the germs.
Coconut oil can be consumed or applied externally to produce the above effects.

Coconut Oil is a natural super antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiprotozoal food

Coconut oil is effective in destroying

Coconut oil----potential HIV cure

  • Most bacteria and virus are encapsuled with a coat of fats which constitute the membrane.
  • The fatty acids which made up this membrane are loosely packed which cause the membrane to be fluid like and very flexible.
  • The medium chain fatty acids of coconut oil are very similar to these fatty acids and have an affinity for them.
  • MCFAs are much smaller and thus can easily adhere and penetrate the membrane which cause it to disintegrate.
  • White blood cells then clean up the remaining components.
  • The antimicrobial activities are due to monoglyceride and fatty acids of MCFAs, the most active of which are lauric acids and capric acids and their monoglycerides.
  • Coconut oil which contains 48% lauric acid and 7% capric acids is the oil with most antimicrobial properties.
  • Studies have shown that monolaurin, monoglyceride derived from coconut oil is beneficial to HIV infected patients.

Coconut oil does not increase cholesterol level

As contrary to common belief, coconut oil not only does not increase blood cholesterol level, it may actually decrease LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol level.
Below are some facts about coconut oil:
1) Coconut oil consist of 92 percent saturated fats, 6 percent monosaturated fats, 2 percent polyunsaturated fats.
2) Coconut oil contain 64 pecent medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs).
3) When fat is injested, it is usually broken down into individual fatty acids, and recombined with protein to form small bundles of fat called lipoproteins. The lipoprotein will diffuse into the blood stream where the fatty acids are deposited into the fat cells.
4) MCFAs bypass the above step and are sent directly to the liver where they are digested and converted into energy.
5) MCFAs can thus increase rate of metabolism and can even help to encourage the burning of long chain fatty acids.
6) Eating a meal containing coconut oil will elevate your metabolism rate for the next 24 hours.
7) So combining moderate amount of coconut oil diet with exercise will actually cause you to lose weight!

Foods that induce sleep

Melatonin and serotonin are the two substances that induce sleep in our brain. Trytophan is the precursor for these chemicals. Foods that contain these substances are:
1) Sesame seeds
2) Spirulina
3) Noni
4) Soya beans
5) Oat
6) Dios Corea
7) Pine nuts, peanuts
8) Black beans
9) Dairy Products
10)Seafood
11)Eggs

Eating a meal rich in carbohydrate and a moderate amount of protein will induce sleep. As carbohydate will increase insulin level which reduce the amino acids that compete with trytophan.

Calcium acts as catalyst to convert trytophan to melatonin and serotonin.

Yet "Do not dine after nine" is the golden rule.

Probiotics

Probiotics is Greek Word for “life”

Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.
--expert consultation group of WHO/FAO in 2001

Our gastrointestinal tract is an ecosystem with a large bacteria polulation forming delicate balance between good and
Potential harmful bacteria

Functions of probiotics:
-Extract nutrients from the diet
-Synthesize vitamins
-Protect against invasion of foreign antigens through:
-Barrier effect: competition for nutrients and binding sites with invading bacteria
-Immune system modultion: activation of certain critical components of immune system

Delicate balance of bacteria can be offset through stress, age, diseases change of diet and anibiotics

In order to be effective, the probiotics must be:
-Live micro organisms
-Adequate amounts
-With health benefits.
